Scaled-Up Network

Scaled-Up Network is a regional community of researchers who study, discuss, and publish in economics and related disciplines. We focus on applied work and its policy implications, with a focus on market institutions. By sharing early work in a constructive culture, we aim to maximize publication impact and foster mutual support for program building and student development. We meet each year in Asheville for Scaled-Up Seminar, where everyone submits a working paper and provides feedback on the others. Our geographic footprint covers much of the Southeast and stretches to parts of the lower Midwest.

Scaled-Up Seminar

Scaled-Up Seminar gathers economics researchers within driving distance of WCU to economize on scheduling demands and accomplish more than a series of individual research seminars could. The goal is to leverage the concentration of scholars in the region to: 1) provide mutual feedback on current research projects; 2) gain exposure to each other’s research agendas thus sparking collaboration on future research projects; and 3) facilitate informal discussion leading to collaboration on research, teaching, and program building.

The Scaled-Up Region

Since the original Scaled-Up Seminar in 2017, SuS has been attended by over 50 scholars from many places around the southeast and lower Midwest. This map shows the geographic footprint of SuS, with Asheville situated at the hub.

A couple of regular attendees come from father away places, electing to fly in at their own expense. These are shown by the arrows pointing north to Massachusetts and west to Louisiana.
